Background:

  • The Black vulture (Coragyps atratus) is a widespread and common vulture species in the Americas.
  • Despite its prevalence, particularly in urban environments, there is limited information regarding the health status of wild Black vultures.
  • Understanding the health of common species like the Black vulture is vital for ecological monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the hematologic reference intervals (RIs) for wild adult Black vultures.
  • To establish a baseline for assessing the health of this species in its natural habitat.

Main Methods:

  • Blood samples were collected from 70 wild Black vultures in São Paulo, Brazil.
  • Hematologic parameters were analyzed using standard avian techniques.
  • Reference intervals were calculated using the Reference Value Adviser software (version 2.0).

Main Results:

  • Established RIs for hemoglobin (8.5-12.5 g/dL), PCV (42.3-54.5%), MCV (203.2-402.6 fL), MCHC (17.4-26.2 g/dL), and total solids (2.4-4.8 g/dL).
  • Determined RIs for RBC count (1.16-2.48 × 10^6 /μL) and WBC count (5.93-27.14 × 10^3 /μL).
  • Provided RIs for differential white blood cell counts (heterophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, monocytes, basophils) and the heterophil:lymphocyte ratio (1.3-36.9).

Conclusions:

  • The study provides essential baseline hematologic data and reference intervals for wild Black vultures.
  • These RIs are valuable for future health assessments and research on New World vultures.
  • This data contributes to the limited existing knowledge on the health of wild vulture populations.
