Strontium-doped beta-tricalcium phosphate was used to create a novel strontium-containing brushite cement. This new material exhibits enhanced mechanical properties, improved injectability, and efficient antibiotic release for potential biomedical applications.
Area of Science:
- Biomaterials Science
- Materials Chemistry
- Bioceramics
Background:
- Calcium phosphate cements are widely used in biomedical applications.
- Strontium incorporation into biomaterials can enhance biological and mechanical properties.
- Developing advanced cements with improved characteristics is crucial for clinical success.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize strontium-doped beta-tricalcium phosphate (Sr-βTCP).
- To develop a novel strontium-containing brushite cement (Sr-Brc) using Sr-βTCP.
- To investigate the effects of strontium on the structural, mechanical, setting, and drug release properties of the brushite cement.
Main Methods:
- Microwave-assisted wet precipitation for Sr-βTCP synthesis.
- Reaction of Sr-βTCP with monocalcium phosphate monohydrate (MCPM) to form Sr-Brc.
- Characterization using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM).
- Strontium content analysis via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of calcium-deficient Sr-βTCP and its conversion to Sr-Brc.
- Strontium incorporation improved the injectability, setting time, and mechanical properties of the brushite cement.
- Enhanced and efficient release of incorporated antibiotics from the Sr-Brc was observed.
Conclusions:
- Strontium doping is a viable strategy to enhance the properties of brushite cements.
- The developed Sr-Brc shows promise as a drug delivery system with improved performance.
- Further research into Sr-Brc for bone regeneration and infection control is warranted.
