Ankle Joint

3.2K
The ankle is formed by the talocrural joint (crural = leg). It consists of the articulations between the talus bone of the foot and the distal ends of the tibia and fibula of the leg. The superior aspect of the talus bone is square-shaped and has three areas of articulation. The top of the talus articulates with the inferior tibia. This is the portion of the ankle joint that carries the body weight between the leg and foot. The sides of the talus are firmly held in position by the articulations...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Arthroscopy
  • Ankle Arthrodesis

Background:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis is an alternative to traditional open surgical techniques.
  • Recent advancements have improved the ease and efficacy of arthroscopic ankle procedures.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the outcomes and viability of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis.
  • To compare arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis with open techniques and total ankle replacement.

Main Methods:

  • Review of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis techniques and outcomes.
  • Consideration of critical surgical factors like joint preparation.
  • Evaluation of patient comorbidities impacting surgical success.

Main Results:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis demonstrates faster union rates.
  • The procedure is associated with fewer complications and reduced postoperative pain.
  • Shorter hospital stays are observed with arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis.

Conclusions:

  • Arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis is a successful and viable option for end-stage ankle arthritis.
  • Careful surgical technique and consideration of comorbidities are essential.
  • It remains a relevant alternative despite the increasing popularity of total ankle replacement.
