Summary

High-sucrose diets increase total adiponectin levels during metabolic syndrome development in rats, contrary to expectations of a decrease. This study clarifies the relationship between adiponectin and metabolic syndrome progression.

Background:

  • Circulating adiponectin levels in metabolic syndrome are controversial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively examine adiponectin levels during metabolic syndrome development.
  • To investigate adiponectin changes in a diet-induced rat model of metabolic syndrome.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study with male Wistar rats fed standard or high-sucrose diets.
  • Measured body weight, total and high molecular weight (HMW) adiponectin, and insulin levels.
  • Conducted oral fat and glucose tolerance tests; measured visceral and subcutaneous fat.

Main Results:

  • High-sucrose diet group showed significantly higher total adiponectin from weeks 2-26.
  • HMW adiponectin levels remained similar between groups.
  • High-sucrose diet group exhibited increased triglycerides, obesity, insulin resistance, and glucose intolerance.

Conclusions:

  • Metabolic syndrome development in rats fed a high-sucrose diet is not associated with decreased circulating adiponectin.
  • Total adiponectin levels positively correlated with triglyceride burden in the high-sucrose diet group.
