Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlations between standard CAPD diagnostic tests and established measures of language (Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals - CELF) and cognition (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - WISC).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective analysis was conducted on 34 children referred for CAPD testing.
  • Participants underwent a CAPD test battery (Frequency Patterns, Dichotic Digits, Competing Sentences) alongside CELF and WISC assessments.
  • Correlation analyses examined relationships between CAPD, CELF, and WISC scores.

Main Results:

  • Dichotic Digits (DD) and Frequency Patterns (FP) tests correlated with Full Scale Intelligence Quotient and working memory, but explained less than 20% of the variance.
  • Language and cognition measures were more strongly correlated with each other than with CAPD tests.
  • Including participants with lower CELF/WISC scores revealed additional correlations with CAPD tests.

Conclusions:

  • While DD and FP showed some cognitive correlations, most CAPD variance remained unexplained, suggesting CAPD is largely independent of cognitive function.
  • The Competing Sentences (CS) test and language measures did not correlate with cognitive abilities.
  • Study findings underscore the critical impact of participant selection criteria (CELF/WISC scores) on observed relationships, emphasizing the need for transparent reporting in CAPD research.
