Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Facial Aesthetics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Chin augmentation genioplasty is crucial for facial aesthetics but traditional osteotomy is invasive.
  • Osteotomy carries risks including mental nerve damage, muscle injury, and prolonged recovery.
  • Gore-Tex implants offer a potential alternative for hypoplastic chin correction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a modified dual plane augmentation genioplasty using Gore-Tex implants.
  • To present surgical experience with this technique for correcting hypoplastic chins.

Main Methods:

  • A dual plane implantation technique using Gore-Tex implants was employed.
  • Vertical slit incisions created supraperiosteal pockets, preserving periosteum and mentalis muscle.
  • Implants were inserted under the periosteum for stable, dual-plane fixation.

Main Results:

  • 47 patients underwent dual plane Gore-Tex chin augmentation (2008-2013).
  • Minor complications included 3 infections (1 treated, 2 removals) and 2 cases of temporary paresthesia.
  • High patient satisfaction was reported, with no observed chin growth limitations in younger patients.

Conclusions:

  • Dual plane Gore-Tex chin augmentation is a safe, simple, and minimally invasive procedure.
  • The technique yields satisfactory aesthetic outcomes.
  • Significant complications like mental nerve injury or growth limitation were avoided.
