Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Surgery
  • Vitreoretinal Surgery

Background:

  • Giant retinal tears (GRTs) are a significant cause of vision loss.
  • Bilateral GRTs present complex surgical challenges.
  • Endotamponade agents are crucial for retinal reattachment.

Observation:

  • A 62-year-old male presented with bilateral GRTs and retinal detachment.
  • Right eye: Superotemporal GRT treated with silicone oil endotamponade.
  • Left eye: Inferotemporal GRT treated with perfluorocarbon liquid endotamponade.

Findings:

  • Excellent surgical outcomes were achieved in both eyes.
  • Final visual acuity at 6 months was 6/6 in both eyes.
  • Successful simultaneous repair of bilateral GRTs was demonstrated.

Implications:

  • Advances in endotamponade agents facilitate simultaneous repair of bilateral GRTs.
  • This approach offers good surgical outcomes and visual recovery.
  • Expanded treatment options for complex retinal detachment cases.
