Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Plastic Surgery

Background:

  • Rhinophyma is a rare, benign skin disease affecting the nose, historically considered the third stage of rosacea.
  • First described by Ferdinando Hebra Von, its pathophysiology remains uncertain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report clinical experience with rhinophyma.
  • To propose and evaluate a novel treatment strategy for rhinophyma management.

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective case study was conducted.
  • The study analyzed 12 cases of rhinophyma over a 12-year period.
  • A consistent therapeutic approach was applied to all patients.

Main Results:

  • A marked male predominance was observed in the identified cases.
  • The treatment involved a combination of dermabrasion, decortication, and fibrin glue application.
  • All patients achieved a favorable outcome with complete epithelialization.

Conclusions:

  • Rhinophyma management is primarily surgical, with diverse techniques available.
  • The combined technique of dermabrasion, decortication, and fibrin glue yielded excellent results.
  • Further consensus on optimal surgical techniques is needed, but this method shows significant promise.
