The indoline-based donor-acceptor system (InBT) changes color when exposed to light due to photo-oxidation. Chloride ions and methanol vapor diffusion help control this color transition and aggregate formation.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Photochemistry
- Supramolecular Chemistry
Background:
- Donor-acceptor systems are crucial in molecular electronics and photonics.
- Indoline derivatives offer tunable electronic and optical properties.
- Photo-induced transformations are key for developing responsive materials.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the photo-oxidation and aggregation behavior of an indoline-based donor-acceptor system (InBT).
- To explore the role of light wavelengths and counter-ions in modulating color transitions.
- To study the effect of methanol vapor diffusion (MVD) on aggregate morphology.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis and characterization of the indoline-based donor-acceptor system (InBT).
- Photochemical studies using UV-Vis spectroscopy at excitation wavelengths of 320 nm and 500 nm.
- Investigation of color changes in chloroform solution.
- Controlled aggregate formation using methanol vapor diffusion (MVD).
Main Results:
- InBT displayed a distinct color transition from pink to orange to yellow in chloroform under light irradiation.
- Photo-oxidation of the N,N-dimethyl indoline moiety was identified as the mechanism for color change.
- Chloride counter ions played a role in neutralizing the photo-oxidation process.
- Methanol vapor diffusion induced the formation of spherical aggregates.
Conclusions:
- The study demonstrates a light-responsive color transition in an indoline-based donor-acceptor system.
- Photo-oxidation and counter-ion interactions are key factors controlling the optical properties.
- MVD provides a method for controlling supramolecular assembly and aggregate formation.
