Drug Discovery: Overview01:26

Drug Discovery: Overview

Drug discovery is a multifaceted process involving extensive screening, testing, and optimization of lead compounds to identify potential new drugs for therapeutic use. It combines several approaches, including screening large numbers of natural products, chemical modification of known active molecules, identification of new drug targets, and rational design based on biological mechanisms and drug-receptor structure. These approaches are carried out in both academic research laboratories and...
Drug Nomenclature01:17

Drug Nomenclature

During the development of a new pharmaceutical, the manufacturer initially assigns a code name to the drug. Once approved, the drug receives a United States Adopted Name (USAN)—a generic, nonproprietary designation. Upon being listed in the United States Pharmacopeia, this nonproprietary name becomes the drug's official name. Additionally, the manufacturer assigns a proprietary name or trademark, which serves as the brand name under which the drug is marketed. It is worth noting that the same...
Drug Biotransformation: Overview01:16

Drug Biotransformation: Overview

Pharmaceutical substances known as xenobiotics are predominantly lipophilic and nonionized. This enables them to permeate lipid bilayers, such as cell membranes, and interact with intracellular target receptors. Lipophilic drugs have an advantage in crossing biological barriers and reaching their intended sites of action. However, lipophilic drugs often have a restricted capacity for renal expulsion or elimination from the body. When these drugs enter the kidneys and undergo glomerular...
Drug Dosage Regimen: Overview01:15

Drug Dosage Regimen: Overview

A drug dosage regimen describes the specific instructions and schedule for administering a drug to a patient. It considers factors such as drug dosage, frequency, route of administration, and duration of treatment. Designing an appropriate dosage regimen for a patient aims to achieve a target drug concentration at the site of action.
Typically, the starting dose and dosing interval are guided by the manufacturer's recommendations based on clinical trials conducted during and after drug...
Drug Delivery: Overview01:16

Drug Delivery: Overview

The selection of a drug's delivery route depends upon its physicochemical properties, including lipid or water solubility and ionization, as well as the therapeutic requirement, such as immediate or sustained effect. These routes can be divided into three primary categories: enteral, parenteral, and topical.
Enteral delivery involves administering drugs directly through swallowing, sublingual placement, or buccal application. Orally administered drugs predominantly navigate the gastrointestinal...
Drug Delivery: Miscellaneous Routes01:22

Drug Delivery: Miscellaneous Routes

Drug delivery methods like oral inhalation, nasal sprays, transdermal patches, eye drops, intravitreal injection,  and rectal administration provide localized effects with reduced toxicity.
Oral inhalation and nasal sprays swiftly transfer drugs across the respiratory epithelium's mucosal layer. Inhaled glucocorticoids and bronchodilators directly target lung conditions such as asthma, while fluticasone nasal spray mitigates allergic rhinitis.
Transdermal patches transport drugs through the...

Summary

This study introduces a novel method using word embeddings to simplify drug package leaflets (DPLs) by finding easier synonyms. While not yet outperforming dictionary-based approaches, this technique offers a promising way to improve patient understanding of medicine information.

Area of Science:

  • Natural Language Processing
  • Computational Linguistics
  • Medical Informatics

Background:

  • Drug Package Leaflets (DPLs) are crucial for safe medicine use but often contain complex language, hindering patient comprehension.
  • Existing methods for simplifying DPLs rely on domain-specific dictionaries, which are not always available or comprehensive.
  • Automating the simplification of DPLs is essential for improving patient adherence and safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an automatic approach for simplifying DPLs by identifying the easiest synonyms for complex terms.
  • To overcome the limitations of dictionary-dependent methods for synonym identification.
  • To enhance patient understanding of crucial medication information.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized word embedding models to represent words as vectors in a semantic space.
  • Assumed that synonyms have similar vector representations due to similar contextual usage.
  • Applied the approach to identify the simplest synonyms for terms in Spanish Drug Package Leaflets.

Main Results:

  • Evaluated the approach using the EasyDPL corpus, comprising 306 Spanish leaflets.
  • Achieved an accuracy of 38.5% in identifying the simplest synonyms using word embeddings.
  • Demonstrated a viable method for DPL simplification without relying on terminological resources.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed word embedding approach offers a promising, dictionary-free method for simplifying DPLs.
  • This technique can be adapted to various domains and languages, including those with scarce terminological resources.
  • Further research is needed to enhance the word embedding approach to surpass the performance of dictionary-based methods.
