Summary

This study examined how applying Lean management principles could improve the efficiency of a cytopathology service. Researchers focused on reducing the time it takes to process and report on both gynaecological and non-gynaecological cytology specimens. They implemented a stepwise Lean workflow that included continuous staining of slides and electronic reporting. The results showed significant reductions in turnaround times for both types of specimens. For non-gynaecological cases, the percentage of same-day reports increased from 4.5% to 56.5%. The authors suggest that Lean principles can help streamline cytopathology workflows and may be useful in other pathology settings.
