Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring01:23

Holter Monitor: 24-Hour Monitoring

3.1K
Holter monitoring is a continuous electrocardiography (ECG) recording that tracks the heart's electrical activity over an extended period, generally 24 to 48 hours. This noninvasive diagnostic tool detects irregular heart rhythms that may not be captured during a standard ECG performed in a clinical setting.DeviceThe Holter monitor is a portable, small device connected to several electrodes on the patient's chest. These electrodes detect the heart's electrical signals and transmit them to the...

Summary

This study found that GENEActiv and Axivity accelerometers show equivalent physical activity measurements. ActiGraph accelerometers showed slightly lower results, but all brands agreed on intensity cut points for epidemiological research.

Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Epidemiology
  • Wearable Technology

Background:

  • Accelerometers are crucial for large-scale physical activity assessment in surveys.
  • Standardizing data across different accelerometer brands is vital for robust epidemiological research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the equivalence of physical activity outcomes between GENEActiv, Axivity AX3, and ActiGraph GT9X accelerometer brands.
  • To facilitate the use of existing accelerometry data for broader epidemiological studies.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty participants wore GENEActiv, Axivity AX3, and ActiGraph GT9X accelerometers on their wrist for 2 hours.
  • Participants engaged in light to active behaviors in a simulated living environment.
  • Data were processed using GGIR software, analyzing average dynamic acceleration (ACC) and time within intensity cut points via equivalence tests and ICC.

Main Results:

  • GENEActiv and Axivity demonstrated equivalence for ACC (ICC=0.95).
  • ActiGraph ACC measurements were approximately 10% lower compared to GENEActiv and Axivity.
  • All three brands showed equivalence for time spent within intensity cut points (>85% of outcomes), with GENEActiv and Axivity showing 100% equivalence.

Conclusions:

  • GENEActiv and Axivity data processed with GGIR are largely equivalent.
  • Good agreement exists for time spent within intensity cut points when comparing GENEActiv/Axivity with ActiGraph.
  • Findings guide the selection of comparable outcomes when integrating data from these accelerometer brands.
