Affective blindsight allows unconscious processing of emotional faces via low spatial frequencies. This suggests a subcortical pathway, bypassing the visual cortex, is crucial for this non-conscious emotional perception.

Observation:

  • A patient (TN) with bilateral cortical blindness and affective blindsight was studied.
  • fMRI was used to present filtered (high/low spatial frequency) and unfiltered fearful and neutral faces.

Findings:

  • Unfiltered fearful faces activated the right amygdala, even without conscious awareness.
  • Low spatial frequency components of fearful faces elicited amygdala activation, while high spatial frequencies did not.
