Background:

Personality structure varies across species, but evolutionary drivers remain unclear.
Previous research explored primate personality, necessitating further investigation into New World monkeys.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine personality structure in common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus).
To compare marmoset personality domains with those found in other primates.
To investigate sex and age differences in marmoset personality.

Main Methods:

Administered a 60-item questionnaire to 100 family-reared adult common marmosets across three colonies.
Utilized principal components analysis to identify personality domains.
Employed linear models to analyze sex and age effects on personality domains.

Main Results:

Identified five personality domains, largely consistent with previous studies.
Four domains (conscientiousness, agreeableness, inquisitiveness, assertiveness) align with other nonhuman primates.
A unique domain, patience, was identified in common marmosets. Males scored lower in patience than females; older marmosets scored lower in inquisitiveness.
Sex and age influenced agreeableness scores, with specific patterns observed in younger/older males and females.

Conclusions:

Primate personality structures exhibit species-specific variations.
Cooperative breeding in common marmosets may have influenced the evolution of social cognition and prosocial personality traits.
The findings contribute to understanding the evolutionary basis of personality diversity in primates.
