Area of Science:

  • Social Psychology
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Gender Studies

Background:

  • Societal norms often dictate professional attire for women.
  • The impact of clothing on professional perception is a subject of ongoing research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether adherence to societal clothing rules enhances perceptions of women's professionalism and competence.
  • To examine the relationship between perceived professionalism and adherence to dress codes.

Main Methods:

  • A within-subjects design was employed with 89 university student participants.
  • Participants rated 10 images of women on 11 attributes based on their attire.
  • Comparison of ratings for women dressed in compliance versus non-compliance with clothing rules.

Main Results:

  • Women dressed in accordance with clothing rules were rated significantly higher on a composite measure of positive attributes (intelligent, competent, professional, etc.).
  • Adherence to dress codes positively correlated with perceptions of competence and professionalism.
  • No significant correlation was found between participants' self-reported sexism or gender and their ratings.

Conclusions:

  • Dressing in line with societal clothing rules significantly enhances perceptions of women's professionalism and competence.
  • Professional appearance, particularly less revealing and less tight clothing, positively influences how women are perceived in academic and workplace contexts.
  • These findings underscore the influence of attire on social perception in professional settings.
