Background:

The Bologna Process and EU Directives have significantly influenced European nursing education.
Variations in entry-level nursing education frameworks existed across European countries in 2014.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify similarities and differences in entry-level nursing education frameworks across European countries in 2014.

Main Methods:

A questionnaire was emailed to nursing associations/regulatory bodies in 30 European countries.
Data collection occurred between January and May 2014, with responses from 21 countries.

Main Results:

A minimum of 12 years of general education was a common entry requirement.
Significant differences were observed in other admission criteria, nurse educator qualifications, and foreign language requirements.
Nursing programs were primarily offered by higher education institutions, with nurses dominating faculty and management roles.

Conclusions:

The Bologna Process has contributed to harmonizing initial nursing education in Europe.
Clearer, standardized requirements for nursing education are necessary.
Further research on the Bologna Process's impact on the nursing profession is recommended.
