    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the diagnostic information of chest respiratory effort signals with EDR methods for sleep apnoea detection.
    • To evaluate the impact of EDR signal calculation methods on diagnostic accuracy.

    Main Methods:

    • Simultaneously recorded chest band and ECG data from 8 subjects were analyzed.
    • Features were extracted from both signals to train a linear discriminant classifier.
    • One-minute epochs were classified as apneic or normal using expert-labeled polysomnogram (PSG) data.

    Main Results:

    • The full respiratory effort signal achieved 87% accuracy in identifying sleep apnoea epochs.
    • EDR signals, even when resampled at each heartbeat, maintained 86% accuracy.
    • The best EDR method, based on QRS area, achieved 81% accuracy.

    Conclusions:

    • EDR signals provide a convenient and useful alternative for sleep apnoea diagnosis.
    • While some information is lost in EDR estimation, its diagnostic utility is largely preserved.
    • EDR shows promise for simplifying sleep apnoea assessment.
