Teeth

1.8K
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Public Health

Background:

  • Root canal re-treatment is crucial for tooth salvage when primary treatment fails.
  • Predictability of outcomes in re-treatment can be challenging.
  • Assessing current practices is vital for improving endodontic care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate knowledge, attitude, and practice of endodontic re-treatment among Pakistani dentists.
  • To determine the influence of clinical experience on re-treatment planning.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted with 240 dentists in four major Pakistani cities.
  • Questionnaires assessed demographics and re-treatment decision-making via a case scenario.
  • Chi-square test compared decisions between dentists with >5 years and <5 years of experience.

Main Results:

  • A 66.67% response rate (160 dentists) was achieved.
  • Under-prepared/under-filled canals were the most common reason for re-treatment.
  • No significant difference in re-treatment decisions was found between experienced and less experienced dentists.

Conclusions:

  • Nearly half of surveyed dentists demonstrated inappropriate decision-making in endodontic re-treatment.
  • Current practices in major Pakistani cities may not meet international standards.
  • Contrary to findings, a significant difference in treatment planning was noted based on experience.
