Chronic Pancreatitis I: Introduction01:24

Chronic Pancreatitis I: Introduction

767
The pancreas, an elongated and flat gland situated behind the stomach, serves a vital function in digesting food and managing blood sugar levels.
Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, which occurs when the immune system becomes active and causes swelling, pain, and disruptions in organ function. Pancreatitis can manifest as either an acute or chronic condition.
Acute pancreatitis arises suddenly and lasts for a brief duration, while chronic pancreatitis is a long-term affliction...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Sports Medicine
  • Musculoskeletal Research

Background:

  • The Achilles tendon is prone to subcutaneous tears, particularly in middle-aged men participating in sports.
  • Acute Achilles tendon ruptures are frequently misdiagnosed, leading to chronic injury presentation in up to 25% of cases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the diagnosis and management of chronic Achilles tendon ruptures.
  • To discuss minimally invasive surgical reconstruction techniques for chronic Achilles tendon injuries.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review focusing on diagnosis and management strategies for chronic Achilles tendon ruptures.
  • Discussion of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including peroneus brevis reconstruction and hamstring autografts.

Main Results:

  • Less invasive peroneus brevis reconstruction and free hamstring autografts demonstrate favorable functional results.
  • Minimally invasive treatments are associated with a lower complication rate compared to open procedures.

Conclusions:

  • Chronic Achilles tendon ruptures are challenging due to tendon end retraction, precluding primary repair.
  • Minimally invasive surgical approaches provide effective functional recovery and reduce the incidence of wound complications and infections.
