Current Trends in Nursing II

3.6K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

4.4K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Accountability and Responsibility of a Nurse I

3.1K
Accountability in nursing is a fundamental principle that underscores the obligation of nurses to take responsibility for their actions and answer for any errors or omissions in patient care. This principle is grounded in the professional, legal, and ethical frameworks that shape nursing practice. For instance, nurses must adhere to all relevant laws, regulations, and practice standards, including guidelines set forth by nursing boards and professional bodies, to ensure their actions comply...

    Summary

Online antibiotic stewardship education improved nurses' knowledge and perceptions regarding antibiotic use in long-term care. Despite high self-confidence, nurses showed significant gains in understanding risks and infection indicators.

    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Pharmacy
    • Infectious Disease Management
    • Nursing Education

    Background:

    • Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern, particularly in long-term care facilities (LTCFs).
    • Nurses play a critical role in antibiotic prescribing decisions and patient management in LTCFs.
    • Targeted education can address knowledge gaps and improve antibiotic stewardship practices.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the impact of online antibiotic stewardship education on nurses' knowledge, perceptions, and self-confidence in LTCFs.
    • To assess the effectiveness and user satisfaction of a brief, online educational module.

    Main Methods:

    • A pre-/post-survey design was employed across three LTCFs in Topeka, Kansas.
    • 140 licensed practical and registered nurses participated in the study.
    • Nurses completed a 5-point Likert-scale survey before and after a 12-minute online module on antibiotic use criteria for common infections.

    Main Results:

    • Nurses reported high baseline self-confidence, which did not significantly change post-education.
    • Statistically significant improvements were observed in 15 out of 33 knowledge and perception indices related to antibiotic use, risks, and infection indicators.
    • The online education was rated as high quality (95%), applicable (95%), and likely to change practice (91%).

    Conclusions:

    • Online antibiotic stewardship education effectively enhanced nurses' knowledge and corrected misperceptions, despite high initial self-confidence.
    • This low-cost, time-efficient educational intervention is a valuable tool for improving antibiotic stewardship in long-term care settings.
    • Findings suggest that nurses may not always recognize their own knowledge deficits concerning antibiotic use.
