Background:

  • Shared decision-making (SDM) integrates patient values with clinical evidence for treatment planning.
  • SDM tools are common in many fields but underutilized in otolaryngology.
  • Research is needed to assess SDM's impact on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if developed SDM tools reduce decisional conflict in children with OSA.
  • To assess the impact of SDM on patient and family understanding of treatment options.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, single-blind, randomized controlled trial involving 50 families.
  • Study group used an SDM tool; control group did not.
  • Decisional conflict measured using SURE, CollaboRATE, and Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS) pre- and post-visit.

Main Results:

  • Post-visit DCS scores were significantly lower in the SDM tool group (6.1) compared to controls (13.3).
  • Improvement in DCS scores was greater in the study group (P = .03).
