Prolonged sitting causes endothelial dysfunction in middle-aged adults. Workplace interventions like standing or pedaling breaks did not prevent this dysfunction in sedentary, overweight individuals.

Background:

  • Prolonged sitting is known to cause endothelial dysfunction in young adults.
  • This dysfunction can be mitigated by fidgeting or standing.
  • However, the effects on middle-aged, sedentary adults and common workplace interventions remain unstudied.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if breaking up prolonged sitting with intermittent standing or underdesk pedaling prevents popliteal artery endothelial dysfunction.
  • The study focused on middle-aged, sedentary, overweight/obese office workers.

Main Methods:

  • Thirteen participants underwent three randomized 4-hour sessions: uninterrupted sitting, sitting with standing breaks, and sitting with desk pedaling breaks.
  • Popliteal artery flow-mediated dilation was measured using Doppler ultrasound before and after each session.

Main Results:

  • Uninterrupted sitting significantly impaired popliteal artery flow-mediated dilation.
  • Neither intermittent standing nor intermittent desk pedaling effectively prevented this sitting-induced endothelial dysfunction.

Conclusions:

  • Brief intermittent standing or desk pedaling bouts do not prevent prolonged sitting-induced leg endothelial dysfunction in middle-aged, sedentary, overweight/obese adults.
  • Further research is needed to identify effective counterinterventions.
