A new trainer assessment questionnaire, the OxTrAQ, was developed and validated. It demonstrates high reliability for assessing surgical trainers, improving the quality of surgical education.
Area of Science:
- Medical Education
- Surgical Training Assessment
- Psychometrics
Background:
- Surgical trainee assessment is established, but trainer assessment is lacking.
- A systematic review identified 12 key attributes for surgical trainers.
Purpose of the Study:
- Develop the Oxford Trainer Assessment Questionnaire (OxTrAQ).
- Explore the questionnaire's domains.
- Test the reliability and validity of the OxTrAQ.
Main Methods:
- Piloted the OxTrAQ at two surgical training centers across two sub-specialties.
- Trainees assessed trainers under clinical supervision.
- Statistical analyses included Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs).
Main Results:
- The 12-item OxTrAQ showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.958).
- Factor analysis identified two domains: general (9 items) and independence (3 items).
- Excellent inter-observer and intra-observer reliability were demonstrated (ICCs > 0.8). Construct validity was also confirmed.
Conclusions:
- The OxTrAQ is a reliable and valid tool for assessing surgical trainers.
- This questionnaire can enhance the quality of surgical education by providing structured feedback to trainers.
