Synthesis of new DNA molecules is carried out by the enzyme DNA polymerase, which adds nucleotides on the daughter strand complementary to the template DNA strand. DNA polymerase has a higher affinity to add the correct base and ensures fidelity during DNA replication. Furthermore,  it exhibits proofreading activity during replication, using an exonuclease domain that cuts off incorrect nucleotides from the nascent DNA strand.

Entropy

The first law of thermodynamics is quantitatively formulated via an equation relating the internal energy of a system, the heat exchanged by it, and the work done on it. A quantitative formulation of the second law of thermodynamics leads to defining a state function, the entropy.
When an ideal gas expands isothermally, the disorder in the gas increases. From the molecular perspective, the gas molecules have more volume to move around in.
Consider an infinitesimal step in the expansion, which...

Entropy

Salt particles that have dissolved in water never spontaneously come back together in solution to reform solid particles. Moreover, a gas that has expanded in a vacuum remains dispersed and never spontaneously reassembles. The unidirectional nature of these phenomena is the result of a thermodynamic state function called entropy (S). Entropy is the measure of the extent to which the energy is dispersed throughout a system, or in other words, it is proportional to the degree of disorder of a...

Epigenetic Regulation

3.9K
Epigenetic changes alter the physical structure of the DNA without changing the genetic sequence and often regulate whether genes are turned on or off. This regulation ensures that each cell produces only proteins necessary for its function. For example, proteins that promote bone growth are not produced in muscle cells. Epigenetic mechanisms play an essential role in healthy development. Conversely, precisely regulated epigenetic mechanisms are disrupted in diseases like cancer.

    Summary

This editorial explores writing qualitative nursing research for publication, emphasizing feminist, praxis-oriented, and poststructuralist perspectives. It highlights how nurses can represent clinical practice through diverse theoretical lenses for greater impact.

    Area of Science:

    • Nursing Research
    • Qualitative Research Methodologies
    • Scientific Writing

    Background:

    • Editorial in the 1996 Eminent Editor series.
    • Focuses on challenges and strategies in publishing qualitative nursing research.
    • Features insights from Trudy Rudge, Senior Lecturer at the University of South Australia.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To discuss how nurses can effectively represent their clinical research in publications.
    • To explore the application of feminist, praxis-oriented, and poststructuralist theories in nursing research writing.
    • To examine stylistic and discursive possibilities in writing qualitative research genres.

    Main Methods:

    • Discussion and editorial commentary on qualitative research publication.
    • Exploration of theoretical frameworks (feminism, praxis, poststructuralism) in nursing research.

  • Analysis of writing strategies using the metaphor of 'unpacking a library'.
  • Main Results:

    • Qualitative research can be effectively represented through diverse theoretical lenses.
    • Nurses can utilize feminist, praxis-oriented, and poststructuralist platforms to articulate clinical research.
    • Stylistic and discursive possibilities exist for writing qualitative research genres, exemplified by unpacking clinical practice.

    Conclusions:

    • Writing qualitative nursing research requires strategic representation informed by theoretical perspectives.
    • Embracing diverse theoretical platforms enhances the articulation and impact of clinical nursing research.
    • The process of writing qualitative research offers rich stylistic and discursive opportunities for nurses.
