Summary

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PL), an aggressive B-cell lymphoma associated with HIV and Epstein-Barr virus, can manifest in the rectum. This report details two HIV-positive patients presenting with rectal PL.

Background:

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
PL is strongly associated with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).
This neoplasia typically presents in the oral cavity but can occur elsewhere.

Observation:

Two cases of HIV-infected patients with rectal plasmablastic lymphoma are presented.
The patients were treated at the HIV service of the Hospital Civil de Guadalajara.
Rectal presentation of PL is uncommon.

Findings:

Plasmablastic lymphoma can present in the gastrointestinal tract, specifically the rectum, in HIV-positive individuals.
The study highlights the importance of considering PL in the differential diagnosis of rectal masses in this patient population.
Detailed case descriptions are provided.

Implications:

Increased awareness of rectal PL in HIV patients is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
This finding may prompt further research into the pathogenesis and management of extranodal PL.
Early detection can potentially improve patient outcomes for this aggressive lymphoma.
