Hardy-Weinberg Principle01:49

Hardy-Weinberg Principle

76.7K
Diploid organisms have two alleles of each gene, one from each parent, in their somatic cells. Therefore, each individual contributes two alleles to the gene pool of the population. The gene pool of a population is the sum of every allele of all genes within that population and has some degree of variation. Genetic variation is typically expressed as a relative frequency, which is the percentage of the total population that has a given allele, genotype or phenotype.

Chi-square Analysis

44.4K
The chi-square test is a statistical hypothesis test. It is used to check whether there is a significant difference between an expected value and an observed value. In the context of genetics, it enables us to either accept or reject a hypothesis, based on how much the observed values deviate from the expected values.
The chi-square test was developed by Pearson in 1990.
The first step of performing a Chi-square analysis is to establish a null hypothesis, which assumes that there is no real...

Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter01:26

Distributions to Estimate Population Parameter

5.2K
The accurate values of population parameters such as population proportion, population mean, and population standard deviation (or variance) are usually unknown. These are fixed values that can only be estimated from the data collected from the samples. The estimates of each of these parameters are sample proportion, the sample mean, and sample standard deviation (or variance). To obtain the values of these sample statistics, data are required that have particular distribution and central...

Incomplete Dominance01:43

Incomplete Dominance

30.2K
Gregor Mendel's work (1822 - 1884) was primarily focused on pea plants. Through his initial experiments, he determined that every gene in a diploid cell has two variants called alleles inherited from each parent. He suggested that amongst these two alleles, one allele is dominant in character and the other recessive. The combination of alleles determines the phenotype of a gene in an organism.

Area of Science:

  • Genetics
  • Statistical Modeling
  • Bioinformatics

Background:

  • Estimating individual breed composition is crucial for livestock management and genetic research.
  • Existing regression methods for breed composition estimation have limitations, including parameter space violations and failure to account for allele frequency uncertainty.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop advanced statistical models for accurate estimation of individual breed composition.
  • To address limitations of current methods by incorporating Bayesian generalized linear models.

Main Methods:

  • Proposed two Bayesian generalized linear models (BIBI and BIBI2) using Binomial distributions and a logit link.
  • BIBI2 incorporates uncertainty in allele frequencies by assigning Beta priors to the design matrix entries.
  • Implemented models on a multibreed Angus-Brahman population dataset and compared with Ordinary Least Squares (OLSK).

Main Results:

  • Both BIBI and BIBI2 models provided more accurate breed composition estimates than OLSK.
  • The BIBI2 model demonstrated a 7.69% increase in accuracy compared to the BIBI model.
  • Posterior means were utilized as point estimators for breed composition.

Conclusions:

  • The developed Bayesian models, particularly BIBI2, offer improved accuracy in estimating individual breed composition.
  • Accounting for uncertainty in allele frequencies is key to enhancing the precision of breed composition estimation.
  • These models provide a robust framework for genetic composition analysis in multibreed populations.
