A new polar-embedded reversed-phase liquid chromatography stationary phase with internal sulfone groups was synthesized. This C18/sulfone phase shows improved separation of acidic and basic compounds, offering enhanced stability and aqueous compatibility.
Area of Science:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Chromatography
- Materials Science
Background:
- Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) is a key separation technique.
- Development of novel stationary phases is crucial for improving chromatographic performance.
- Polar-embedded stationary phases offer unique selectivity and improved mobile phase compatibility.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize and characterize a novel polar-embedded RPLC stationary phase.
- To investigate the chromatographic properties of the new C18/sulfone stationary phase.
- To evaluate its performance for separating various analytes, including acidic and basic compounds.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of the stationary phase using "thiol-ene" click chemistry and oxidation.
- Characterization of the material using elemental analysis.
- Chromatographic evaluation of the stationary phase with neutral, acidic, and basic analytes.
Main Results:
- The C18/sulfone stationary phase was successfully prepared, confirmed by elemental analysis.
- The new phase showed comparable retention for neutral analytes but improved performance for acidic and basic analytes.
- Enhanced stability (pH 1.0-10.0) and 100% aqueous mobile phase compatibility were observed.
- Good batch-to-batch reproducibility (RSD ≤ 1.73%) was achieved.
Conclusions:
- The C18/sulfone stationary phase is a promising material for polar-embedded RPLC.
- It offers advantages in separating challenging analytes and exhibits robust performance characteristics.
- The synthetic strategy is suitable for producing reproducible stationary phases.
