Aspirin effectively reduced venous thromboembolism (VTE) risk in patients undergoing orthopedic oncology surgery. This study suggests aspirin is a suitable VTE chemoprophylaxis option, particularly for soft-tissue sarcoma patients.
Area of Science:
- Orthopaedic Surgery
- Oncology
- Vascular Medicine
Background:
- Patients undergoing orthopedic oncologic surgery face a high risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE).
- Current guidelines are evolving to consider aspirin for postoperative VTE prophylaxis.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the effectiveness of aspirin in preventing VTE after orthopedic oncologic procedures.
- To analyze the institution's experience with aspirin as a VTE prophylactic agent.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective review of 130 patients (142 procedures) with primary bone/soft-tissue tumors or metastatic carcinoma.
- Analysis of demographic data, diagnoses, VTE history, surgical procedures, and prophylaxis methods (aspirin vs. non-aspirin).
- Comparison of VTE rates between aspirin and non-aspirin prophylaxis groups.
Main Results:
- Overall VTE rate was 4.9% (7/142 procedures).
- Aspirin prophylaxis (n=103) had a VTE rate of 2.9% compared to 10.3% for non-aspirin prophylaxis (n=39).
- No VTEs occurred in aspirin-treated patients with metastatic carcinoma, soft-tissue sarcoma, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma.
Conclusions:
- Aspirin appears to be a safe and effective option for VTE chemoprophylaxis in orthopedic oncology patients.
- Aspirin may be particularly beneficial for patients with soft-tissue sarcoma.
- Further research with advanced study designs is recommended.
