Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare patient demographics, screening rates, disease stage, and survival between a safety net hospital and a tertiary care center.
  • To evaluate the quality of colorectal cancer care provided by safety net hospitals.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative review of 350 colorectal cancer patients from each of two institutions (one safety net, one private tertiary care) in the same metropolitan area.
  • Data collected from 2010 to 2016.
  • Overall survival was the primary outcome measure.

  • The safety net hospital served a higher proportion of uninsured/Medicaid patients with lower median household income.
  • Initial presentation stage IV disease rates were similar (26% vs 20%).
