Fetal Circulation01:14

Fetal Circulation

3.3K
Fetal circulation is a unique system that facilitates the exchange of gases, nutrients, and waste products between the developing fetus and the mother. This intricate process takes place through a special organ called the placenta.
Two umbilical arteries transport blood from the fetus to the placenta. At the placenta, the blood absorbs oxygen and nutrients while simultaneously eliminating waste products. This oxygen-enriched and nutrient-rich blood then returns to the fetus through one...

Summary

Delayed umbilical cord separation in a preterm infant resolved without intervention. A small urachal cyst was identified as a potential contributing factor, highlighting the importance of monitoring such cases.

Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Pediatric Surgery

Background:

  • Delayed umbilical cord separation is uncommon in neonates.
  • Persistent umbilical stump requires careful evaluation to rule out underlying pathology.

Observation:

  • A preterm infant presented with an umbilical cord that had not separated by four weeks of age.
  • The umbilical cord tissue appeared persistently moist and failed to dry.
  • No signs of immunodeficiency or infection were present.

Findings:

  • Abdominal ultrasound revealed a small urachal cyst.
  • The urachal cyst was deemed incidental and not the primary cause of delayed separation.
  • The infant's condition did not warrant specific medical or surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the benign nature of some delayed umbilical cord separation cases.
  • It highlights the utility of ultrasound in identifying incidental findings like urachal cysts in neonates.
  • Management should be conservative unless complications arise.
