Summary

Solid silicone biceps implants can enhance arm size and correct deformities. Submuscular placement is safer than subfascial to reduce complications like implant malposition.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Aesthetic Surgery
  • Implant-based Body Augmentation

Background:

  • Biceps augmentation with solid silicone implants is increasingly popular.
  • Limited literature exists on the safety and efficacy of this procedure.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate complications, surgical planning, and aesthetic outcomes of biceps augmentation using solid silicone implants.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective chart review of patients undergoing biceps augmentation (April 2011-May 2016).
  • Analysis of surgical indications, complication rates, revision needs, and aesthetic results.

Main Results:

  • 21 male patients (mean age 42.6 years) were included.
  • Indications: increased size (n=16), post-rupture deformity correction (n=5).

  • High complication rate (48%), including asymmetry, seroma, infection, and hematoma. Reoperation rate was 23.8%. Subfascial placement had higher complication and malposition rates (38%) compared to submuscular.
  • Conclusions:

    • Solid silicone implants effectively increase upper arm volume and correct deformities.
    • Submuscular implant placement is recommended over subfascial to minimize risks such as malposition.
