Predicting Reaction Outcomes02:24

Predicting Reaction Outcomes

11.0K
Kinetics describes the rate and path by which a reaction occurs. In contrast, thermodynamics deals with state functions and describes the properties, behavior, and components of a system. It is not concerned with the path taken by the process and cannot address the rate at which a reaction occurs. Although it does provide information about what can happen during a reaction process, it does not describe the detailed steps of what appears on an atomic or a molecular level. On the other hand,...

Outcomes of Glycolysis01:13

Outcomes of Glycolysis

107.8K
Nearly all the energy used by cells comes from the bonds that make up complex organic compounds. These organic compounds are broken down into simpler molecules, such as glucose. As a result, cells extract energy from glucose over many chemical reactions—a process called cellular respiration.
Cellular respiration can occur aerobically (with oxygen) or anaerobically (without oxygen). In the presence of oxygen, cellular respiration starts with glycolysis and continues with pyruvate...

Guidelines for Writing Outcome

4.1K
When developing expected outcomes for a patient care plan, the nurse should adhere to the following recommendations:
Patient outcomes reflect the patient's response to the goal rather than what the nurse aims to achieve. Terminology should be observable and measurable to avoid the reader's interpretation. The desired outcome should be realistic and achievable in the designated care timeframe. Expected outcomes should align with adjunctive therapies. The outcome should enhance care...

Personal Identity01:25

Personal Identity

475
Personal identity is the deeply felt sense of self that individuals cultivate over time, intricately woven from intrinsic qualities they consider essential to their existence—qualities such as morality, intelligence, and friendliness. These attributes serve as vital internal benchmarks, guiding individuals in evaluating whether their actions resonate with their true selves. When personal identity takes center stage in one's life, individuals often emphasize their distinctiveness,...

Psychodynamic Perspectives on Personality01:27

Psychodynamic Perspectives on Personality

1.6K
The psychodynamic perspective in psychology asserts that most personality functions operate unconsciously, outside of awareness. This means that the motives and emotions driving behavior often remain hidden, automatically buried in the unconscious mind as a defense mechanism to shield us from psychological distress. According to this theory, the unconscious mind contains thoughts, memories, and emotions that are too disturbing to face directly.
Psychodynamic theorists argue that unconscious...

Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

888
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Disability Studies
  • Health Services Research
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The Personal Outcome Measures® (POM) is a person-centered tool assessing quality of life (QOL) for individuals with disabilities receiving long-term services and supports.
  • POM has been used for 25 years, measuring satisfaction across life domains and evaluating organizational supports for people with disabilities.
  • The tool's effectiveness relies on continuous refinement to align with advancements in disability services and the lived experiences of people with disabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To re-validate the Personal Outcome Measures® (POM) to ensure its continued accuracy in measuring QOL for people with disabilities.
  • To assess the underlying structure and psychometric properties of the POM instrument.

Main Methods:

  • Principal Components Analysis (PCA) was employed to analyze data from 1473 individuals with disabilities.
  • PCA was used to identify any indicators for removal and to determine the latent structure of the POM.

Main Results:

  • The Personal Outcome Measures® (POM) demonstrated construct validity.
  • The analysis revealed that the 21 indicators of the POM can be grouped into five distinct underlying factors: my human security; my community; my relationships; my choices; and, my goals.

Conclusions:

  • The 21 indicators and five factors of the POM provide a comprehensive assessment of QOL for individuals with disabilities.
  • This multifaceted QOL assessment aims to enhance the lives of people with disabilities through improved service delivery and support.
