Multiple sclerosis patients have altered red blood cell (RBC) fatty acid (FA) profiles, showing lower essential FA levels. These changes suggest a disturbance in FA exchange between plasma and cells in multiple sclerosis (MS).

Background:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
  • Fatty acid (FA) composition is crucial for cell membrane integrity and function.
  • Previous studies indicated altered plasma lipid FA composition in MS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the fatty acid (FA) composition of red blood cell (RBC) phospholipids in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients.
  • To compare FA profiles in RBCs of MS patients with those of healthy controls.
  • To investigate correlations between plasma and RBC lipid FA composition in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Thin-layer chromatography and gas chromatography were used for FA analysis.
  • Phospholipid FA composition of RBCs was determined in 61 MS patients and 61 controls.
  • FA percentages in plasma and RBC lipids were correlated.

Main Results:

  • MS patients exhibited significantly lower proportions of linoleic and arachidonic acids in most RBC phospholipids.
  • A compensatory increase in saturated fatty acids was observed in MS patients' RBCs.

Conclusions:

  • Red blood cell (RBC) phospholipid FA alterations in MS patients indicate a relative deficiency of essential fatty acids (EFAs).

  • These findings highlight the importance of essential fatty acid status in multiple sclerosis.
