Crystalline retinopathy can persist for years after intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injections. These macular crystals, located in the preretinal or subhyaloid space, appear nonpathologic and show slow movement.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Retinal Diseases
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) is used to treat various retinal conditions.
- Long-term complications of IVTA, such as persistent crystalline deposits, require further characterization.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the characteristics of crystalline retinopathy developing more than one year after intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection.
- To analyze the clinical course and imaging findings of these persistent crystals.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective, interventional case series.
- Inclusion of 16 patients (18 eyes) with crystalline retinopathy >1 year post-IVTA.
- Follow-up averaged 5.8 years post-injection.
Main Results:
- Refractile preretinal crystals observed >1 year after IVTA.
- Crystals were angiographically silent (no fluorescein or indocyanine green uptake).
- Optical coherence tomography confirmed preretinal/subhyaloid location; crystals showed slow dissolution and movement, sometimes in a circular pattern.
Conclusions:
- Macular crystals can persist for years following IVTA.
- The crystals are located in the preretinal or subhyaloid space.
- These persistent, angiographically silent crystals appear nonpathologic.
