Unlike carbon, water, and nitrogen, phosphorus is not present in the atmosphere as a gas. Instead, most phosphorus in the ecosystem exists as compounds, such as phosphate ions (PO43-), found in soil, water, sediment and rocks. Phosphorus is often a limiting nutrient (i.e., in short supply). Consequently, phosphorus is added to most agricultural fertilizers, which can cause environmental problems related to runoff in aquatic ecosystems.

    Background:

    • Macropore flow's role in phosphorus (P) transport in tile-drained agricultural systems is not well understood at the field scale.
    • Contaminant transport via macropore pathways poses significant environmental risks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and implement a new macropore flow subroutine within the Agricultural Policy Environmental eXtender (APEX) model.
    • To improve the accuracy of modeling phosphorus (P) loadings and discharge in agricultural landscapes.

    Main Methods:

    • Coupled matrix-excess and matrix-desiccation macropore flow theory with a modified P routine in the APEX model.
    • Applied and evaluated the modified APEX model using 31 months of monitoring data from a poorly drained field in Western Ohio.

    Main Results:

    • The macropore subroutine significantly improved calibration and validation for tile and total discharge, elevating performance ratings.
    • Dissolved reactive P load calibration and validation statistics for tile P loads improved from unsatisfactory to very good.
    • Simulations indicated median annual matrix-desiccation macropore flow and P load contributions of 48% and 43%, respectively, with peak loading in winter and spring.

    Conclusions:

    • The enhanced APEX model accurately simulates macropore flow and P contributions to tile drainage.
    • Matrix-desiccation macropore flow is a significant pathway for P transport, even during seasons with less soil cracking.
    • The model provides a valuable tool for assessing annual macropore P contributions and informing P site assessment strategies.
