Intellectual Disability01:29

Intellectual Disability

796
Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by deficits in intellectual and adaptive functioning that manifest during the developmental period. This condition encompasses challenges in reasoning, memory, problem-solving, and learning, accompanied by impairments in everyday life skills, such as communication, self-care, and social interactions. Intellectual disability affects approximately 1% of the population in the United States, impacting an estimated 5...

Learning Disabilities01:25

Learning Disabilities

639
Learning disabilities are cognitive disorders caused by neurological impairments that affect cognitive functions like language and reading, without indicating overall intellectual or developmental challenges. These disabilities differ from global intellectual or developmental disabilities as they are limited to distinct cognitive functions. Common learning disabilities include dysgraphia, dyslexia, and dyscalculia, each of which impacts unique aspects of learning.

Self-Help Support Groups01:28

Self-Help Support Groups

369
Self-help support groups are voluntary, community-based organizations that provide a platform for individuals with shared concerns to exchange support, insights, and practical strategies for coping with life challenges. Typically led by group members or paraprofessionals, these groups form a cornerstone of mental health care, especially in reaching populations that are underserved by traditional healthcare systems.

Basicity of Aliphatic Amines01:21

Basicity of Aliphatic Amines

6.9K
Amines can behave as Brønsted–Lowry bases by accepting a proton from the acid to form corresponding conjugate acids. Due to a lone pair of nonbonding electrons, aliphatic amines can also act as Lewis bases by forming a covalent bond with an electrophile.
To measure the basicity of amines, two conventions are generally used. The first defines Kb as the basicity constant for the deprotonation reaction of water by the amine, as presented in Figure 1. Conventionally, lower Kb indicates higher...

Area of Science:

  • Assistive Technology
  • Disability Studies
  • Rehabilitation Engineering

Background:

  • Individuals with severe/profound intellectual and multiple disabilities often exhibit sedentary behavior.
  • Promoting occupational engagement and mobility is crucial for improving health and environmental interaction in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a technology-aided program for supporting independent occupation and mobility.
  • To assess the program's ability to increase heart rates to beneficial levels in participants with intellectual and sensory disabilities.

Main Methods:

  • A computer system delivered auditory/visual cues and preferred stimulation to guide object collection and transport.
  • A non-concurrent multiple baseline design across participants was employed.
  • Participants were guided to collect objects from desks and deposit them into a carton.

Main Results:

  • All participants demonstrated increased independent object collection and transport.
  • Participant heart rates elevated to levels indicative of moderate-intensity physical exercise.
  • The program facilitated enhanced occupational engagement and mobility.

Conclusions:

  • Technology-aided programs can effectively promote occupational engagement and mobility in individuals with multiple disabilities.
  • This approach offers a viable strategy for improving physical activity and well-being in this population.
