Summary

This study examined thiol and disulphide levels in people with bipolar disorder during manic and remission phases. The researchers found that manic BD patients had lower thiol levels than remission patients and healthy controls. Disulphide levels were higher in manic BD patients, suggesting increased oxidative stress. These findings support the idea that thiol/disulphide balance is disrupted in BD and may be a useful biomarker for diagnosis and treatment. The study adds to the evidence that oxidative stress plays a role in BD and could guide future therapeutic approaches.
