Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate and compare mastication and oral sensory capabilities in individuals with and without diagnosed sleep bruxism.
  • To determine if sleep bruxism affects key aspects of oral motor function and sensory perception.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty dentate adults (30 with sleep bruxism, 30 without) participated.
  • Sleep bruxism was clinically diagnosed and verified using the Bruxoff® device.
  • Mastication was assessed via swallowing threshold (median particle size) and masticatory efficiency (sieving method). Oral sensory function was evaluated using the oral stereognosis test.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in median particle size, masticatory efficiency, or oral sensory function between the sleep bruxism group and the control group (p > 0.05).
  • These findings indicate that sleep bruxism does not impair these specific oral functions in dentate adults.

Conclusions:

  • Dentate adults with sleep bruxism exhibit comparable mastication and oral sensory function to their non-bruxer counterparts.
