Background:

  • Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical subspecialty.
  • Understanding the practice patterns of self-identified IRs is crucial for resource allocation and training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the patterns of procedural, clinical evaluation and management (E/M), and diagnostic imaging services provided by self-identified interventional radiologists (IRs) in the U.S.

Main Methods:

  • Linked recent Medicare national downloadable files.
  • Defined IRs by self-identification on Medicare claims or enrollment.
  • Analyzed work relative value units (WRVU) for interventional services and E/M, using chi-square, t tests, and logistic regression.

Main Results:

  • 3132 physicians identified as IRs.
  • Work distribution was bimodal: 25% focused ≥91% on interventional services, 25% focused ≤5%.
  • Early career (≤30 years post-med school), male, and academic IRs were more intervention-oriented. E/M services comprised only 1.4% of all billed services.

Conclusions:

  • Self-identified IRs exhibit a bimodal practice pattern regarding interventional versus diagnostic work.
  • Despite emphasis on clinical integration, evaluation and management (E/M) services are infrequently reported by IRs.
