Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

492
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Long-term Depression01:05

Long-term Depression

33.4K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Relationship Formation

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Asthma-I: Introduction

3.6K
Asthma is a chronic respiratory ailment that requires careful management due to its varying symptoms and influencing factors. It is characterized by airway inflammation, bronchial hyperresponsiveness, and reversible airflow obstruction, leading to symptoms like wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and coughing. The symptom frequency and intensity may vary considerably over time. It is also linked to immune system responses to allergens and irritants, highlighting the complex...

Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation

Boiling Point Elevation
The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure is equal to ambient atmospheric pressure. Since the vapor pressure of a solution is lowered due to the presence of nonvolatile solutes, it stands to reason that the solution’s boiling point will subsequently be increased. Vapor pressure increases with temperature, and so a solution will require a higher temperature than will pure solvent to achieve any given vapor pressure, including one...

Summary

Asthma patients are more likely to have a history of psychiatric disorders and current depressive symptoms. This highlights the importance of screening asthma patients for mental health conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Asthma is a growing health concern with significant physical and financial impacts.
  • A known link exists between asthma and psychiatric disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between asthma diagnosis and both current depressive symptoms and lifetime psychiatric disorder history.
  • To analyze these relationships in a large, diverse, community-based sample.

Main Methods:

  • Data from 2168 participants in the Dallas Heart Study were analyzed.
  • Logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between asthma diagnosis and psychiatric history/depressive symptoms, controlling for demographics.

Main Results:

  • 13.4% of participants had an asthma diagnosis.
  • Asthma diagnosis was significantly linked to a history of mental health disorders (OR 1.81) and moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms (OR 1.59).
  • These associations were not influenced by age, gender, race, smoking status, or BMI.

Conclusions:

  • Asthma diagnosis is associated with a higher likelihood of current depressive symptoms and a history of psychiatric disorders.
  • These findings underscore the clinical need to assess mental health in individuals with asthma.
  • Further research is recommended to explore these connections in diverse populations.
