Background:

  • Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell cancer affecting bone marrow.
  • MM is associated with hemostatic abnormalities, increasing risks of bleeding and thrombosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate hemostatic dysfunction in multiple myeloma patients.
  • To identify laboratory markers associated with bleeding and thrombosis in MM.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed complete blood count, biochemical parameters, and hemostasis markers in 29 MM patients and 30 controls.
  • Evaluated platelet count, PT, APTT, TT, factor VIII, fibrinogen, D-dimer, and lupus anticoagulant.

Main Results:

  • All 29 MM patients (100%) exhibited abnormal hemostasis parameters.
  • Bleeding tendency markers were abnormal in 27.6% of patients.
  • Prothrombotic markers were present in 82.7% of patients, with elevated D-dimer being most common (75.9%).

Conclusions:

  • MM patients universally present with laboratory evidence of hemostatic dysfunction.
  • This dysfunction may predispose to thrombotic or bleeding complications.
  • Screening for hemostatic abnormalities at diagnosis can improve patient prognosis.
