Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy is linked to an increased risk of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children. However, the study found no clear association between adult atopic dermatitis and alcohol use.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Maternal exposures during pregnancy are linked to offspring atopic dermatitis (AD) risk.
- The impact of prenatal alcohol use on childhood AD risk remains unclear.
- Associations between adult AD and alcohol consumption require investigation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To systematically review and meta-analyze the association between alcohol use and atopic dermatitis (AD).
- Investigated two key relationships: prenatal alcohol exposure and childhood AD, and adult AD and alcohol use.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies from PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science.
- Data extraction performed by two independent reviewers.
- Included 18 studies for qualitative and 12 for quantitative analysis.
Main Results:
- A positive association was found between maternal alcohol use during pregnancy and the development of AD in offspring (pooled OR 1.16; 95% CI 1.09-1.24).
- No consistent association was observed between adult or adolescent AD and alcohol use (pooled OR 1.06; 95% CI 0.92-1.23).
Conclusions:
- Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy may increase the risk of atopic dermatitis in offspring.
- Further high-quality prospective studies are needed to confirm the relationship between alcohol use and AD.
