Acrodermatitis enteropathica, a zinc deficiency disorder, presents with skin issues, hair loss, and diarrhea. Early diagnosis and zinc treatment are crucial for recovery, especially when mimicking fungal infections.

Background:

  • Acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE) is a rare genetic or acquired zinc deficiency disorder.
  • AE symptoms include acral dermatitis, alopecia, diarrhea, and growth retardation.
  • AE dermatological manifestations can resemble fungal or other skin infections.

Observation:

  • A 7-month-old female presented with disseminated dermatosis, initially suspected as immunodeficiency or cutaneous mycosis.
  • Previous treatments with antifungals and antibiotics were ineffective.
  • Diagnostic workup ruled out immunodeficiency and fungal infections, leading to suspicion of AE.

Findings:

  • Serum zinc levels were found to be low, confirming the diagnosis of acrodermatitis enteropathica.
  • The patient showed significant clinical improvement shortly after initiating oral zinc supplementation.
