Contralateral premolars are validated as reliable samples for endodontic comparison studies. Micro-CT analysis showed no significant differences in root canal volume, twisting, or shape changes after instrumentation.
Area of Science:
- Endodontics
- Dental Materials Science
- Biotechnology
Background:
- Contralateral premolars are often used in endodontic studies for comparison.
- Validating their use requires rigorous analysis of root canal morphology changes after instrumentation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate the use of contralateral premolars as samples in endodontic comparison studies.
- To compare root canal changes (volume, twisting, 3D shape) before and after instrumentation using micro-CT.
- To determine if contralateral premolar roots (CPRs) yield non-significantly different outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Micro-CT scanning of 44 contralateral premolar roots before and after instrumentation.
- Measurement of root canal lengths (RCLs) using microscopy, apex locator, and micro-CT.
- Statistical analysis to compare pre- and post-instrumentation data.
Main Results:
- Canal volume significantly increased post-instrumentation (P < 0.05).
- No significant changes in twisting (83% of pairs) or 3D shape deviation were observed (P > 0.05).
- No significant differences in RCL were found between contralateral pairs using any method (P > 0.05).
Conclusions:
- Contralateral premolar root canals exhibit similar changes in volume, 3D shape, and twisting post-instrumentation.
- The study validates contralateral premolars as suitable samples for comparative endodontic research.
- The null hypothesis of no significant difference between contralateral pairs could not be rejected.
