Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop two versions of a body function index in cerebral palsy (BFI-CP I and BFI-CP II).
  • To examine the relationship and differences between BFI-CP I, BFI-CP II, and the GMFCS.
  • To explore classification differences beyond GMFCS ordinal levels.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from 405 children with CP (18 months to 5 years) from the Move & PLAY Study.
  • Developed BFI-CP I using a summing technique.
  • Developed BFI-CP II using cluster analysis.

Main Results:

  • Strong correlations were found between BFI-CP I and GMFCS (r=0.92), BFI-CP II and GMFCS (r=0.93), and BFI-CP I and II (r=0.92) (p<0.001).
  • Significant differences were observed between BFI-CP I and GMFCS (χ²=670.49, df=16, p<0.001).
  • Significant differences were also noted between BFI-CP II and GMFCS (χ²=685.57, df=16, p<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The two BFI-CP versions demonstrate strong correlations with the GMFCS.
  • Both BFI-CP versions show significant differences compared to the GMFCS.
  • The BFI-CP I and BFI-CP II can serve as complementary tools for describing children with CP.
