Chest Physiotherapy01:24

Chest Physiotherapy

779
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT) is a therapeutic technique used in respiratory care to improve ventilation, clear bronchial secretions, and enhance the efficiency of respiratory muscles. This therapy includes three primary procedures: postural drainage, percussion, and vibration. It can be performed on spontaneously breathing patients and those who are intubated and mechanically ventilated.
Purpose
CPT is primarily used for patients with excessive bronchial secretions who have difficulty clearing...

Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.1K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Summary

Adding weekend physiotherapy for high-risk older patients significantly improved their mobility and readiness for discharge. This intervention may reduce the need for extended care after hospitalization.

Area of Science:

  • Geriatric Medicine
  • Rehabilitation Science
  • Physical Therapy

Background:

  • Hospital-associated disability (HAD) is a significant concern for older adults in acute care.
  • Maintaining mobility is crucial for preventing prolonged hospital stays and functional decline in geriatric patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of additional weekend physiotherapy on mobility impairments in high-risk elderly patients.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of weekend physiotherapy interventions in an acute medical setting.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, non-randomized controlled trial involving 41 high-risk older patients.
  • Patients were divided into a control group (n=19) and an experimental group (n=22).
  • The de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) and Barthel Index (BI) were used to measure outcomes.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant difference (p < .05) was observed between groups for both DEMMI and BI.
  • The experimental group receiving additional weekend physiotherapy showed greater improvements in mobility and daily function.

Conclusions:

  • Weekend physiotherapy demonstrably enhances physical function in elderly patients.
  • This intervention can better prepare patients for discharge, potentially reducing the need for alternate levels of care.
