Summary

Chickenpox cases decreased in Poland in 2015, with lower incidence than in 2014. This decline in chickenpox (varicella) may be linked to increased vaccination efforts and public awareness.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Public Health
  • Immunization

Background:

  • Chickenpox (varicella) vaccination is recommended in Poland and included in the National Immunisation Programme since 2002.
  • A significant number of chickenpox cases necessitates ongoing vaccination strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the epidemiological status of chickenpox in Poland during 2015.
  • To compare the 2015 chickenpox situation with previous years.

Main Methods:

  • Descriptive analysis of aggregate data from "Infectious diseases and poisonings in Poland in 2015" and "Vaccinations in Poland in 2015".
  • Utilized the National Immunisation Programme data for 2015.

Main Results:

  • Poland registered 187,624 chickenpox cases in 2015, with incidence at 487.9 per 100,000 population, a decrease from 2014.

  • The highest incidence was observed in children aged 0-4 years. Incidence was higher in men and rural residents compared to women and urban residents, respectively.
  • 1,340 hospitalizations and 63,138 vaccinations against chickenpox were recorded.
  • Conclusions:

    • A decrease in chickenpox cases in Poland during 2015 was noted.
    • This reduction may be attributed to vaccination, public health initiatives, and increased public awareness regarding vaccine-preventable diseases.
