Birth Control Methods

6.9K
Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although...

Imprinting01:22

Imprinting

11.2K
Behavioral imprinting is observed in some newborn animals and occurs when they develop strong and specific attachments to another animal (usually a parent) following brief, early-life exposures. Offspring imprint onto parents within a brief period after birth or hatching; this time window is called the critical period. Once imprinting occurs, the bond established between the parents and their offspring is usually long-lasting.

Reproductive Cloning01:27

Reproductive Cloning

32.8K
Reproductive cloning is the process of producing a genetically identical copy—a clone—of an entire organism. While clones can be produced by splitting an early embryo—similar to what happens naturally with identical twins—cloning of adult animals is usually done by a process called somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT).
Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer
In SCNT, an egg cell is taken from an animal and its nucleus is removed, creating an enucleated egg. Then a somatic...

Area of Science:

  • Biochemistry
  • Biomarker Discovery
  • Metabolomics

Background:

  • Preterm birth (PTB) remains a significant global health challenge.
  • Identifying reliable biomarkers for PTB is crucial for timely intervention.
  • Metabolomics offers a powerful approach to uncover biochemical signatures associated with PTB.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review current research on metabolomic biomarker discovery for PTB.
  • To analyze the application of metabolomics in prenatal and postnatal biofluids.
  • To identify requirements for translating metabolomic findings into clinical practice.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of prenatal biofluids (amniotic fluid, maternal urine/blood, cervicovaginal fluid) using metabolomics.
  • Utilized nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.
  • Examination of postnatal biofluids (amniotic fluid, cord blood, newborn/maternal blood, breast milk) for PTB assessment.

Main Results:

  • Metabolomic studies have identified potential predictive biomarkers for PTB.
  • Research has advanced the biochemical understanding of PTB metabolism.
  • Key requirements for experimental design and analytical protocols for clinical translation have been identified.

Conclusions:

  • Metabolomics is a promising tool for PTB biomarker discovery.
  • Further refinement of methodologies and experimental designs is necessary for clinical application.
  • Future developments are needed to bridge the gap between laboratory findings and clinical utility for PTB management.
