Group Polarization01:01

Group Polarization

39.2K
Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Religious Studies

Background:

  • Belief in immortality is widespread, yet conceptions of who lives on and how vary significantly.
  • Existing research often overlooks the nuanced perceptions of post-mortem existence tied to moral actions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the link between perceived morality and the type of immortality attributed to individuals.
  • To explore how these perceptions of immortality influence paranormal beliefs and the perceived locations of spirits.

Main Methods:

  • Seven empirical studies were conducted, employing surveys and scales to measure perceptions of morality, immortality types (trapped vs. transcendent), and paranormal beliefs.
  • Participants' judgments about the afterlife and spirit manifestations were analyzed in relation to their moral evaluations.

Main Results:

  • A bidirectional relationship was found between perceived morality and immortality type: good-doers are associated with transcendent immortality (souls persisting beyond space-time), and evil-doers with trapped immortality (souls bound to Earth).
  • Paranormal perceptions are explained by these links; evil spirits are associated with earthly locations (houses, forests), while good spirits are typically in expansive locations (mountaintops), though exceptions exist.

Conclusions:

  • Moral judgments shape fundamental beliefs about immortality, differentiating between spiritual transcendence and earthly entrapment.
  • Understanding these culturally embedded beliefs is crucial for explaining paranormal phenomena and the perceived agency of spiritual entities.
