    Background:

    • Retinoblastoma is a hereditary eye cancer.
    • Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes play a role in immune response.
    • Previous research has explored potential links between HLA and various cancers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between HLA antigens and hereditary retinoblastoma.
    • To assess T cell function in retinoblastoma patients and their relatives.

    Main Methods:

    • Tested 43 members from three families for HLA-A, B, C, and DR antigens.
    • Performed mixed lymphocyte cultures on 18 patients, 16 unaffected relatives, and 16 controls.
    • Examined T cell response to mitogens like phytohaemagglutinin, concanavalin A, and pokeweed mitogen.

    Main Results:

    • No significant associations were found between retinoblastoma and any tested HLA antigens.
    • Mitogen tests suggested a potential reduction in T cell function among patients.

    Conclusions:

    • HLA antigens are not associated with hereditary retinoblastoma.
    • Reduced T cell function may be a characteristic of retinoblastoma patients.
